ARTIST STATEMENT
GEMMA MACKENZIE is an artist who is inspired by events that occur in nature which can cause the state of entities or the environment to become altered. She is interested in questioning at what point changes within nature become irreversible and have a permanent affect, as a result of becoming overwhelmed and consumed by these events such as climate change, illnesses and growing mould.
Her work takes inspiration from methods of analysis and the visual outcomes created through testing, predominantly scientific/ medical, to create works that challenge our perception of materials and objects. She questions this through the interaction between materials and the subsequent outcomes of when they are combined, using print, sculptural forms and installations. She explores disturbances within form, pattern and surface.
